Learning Event 1: INTRODUCTION TO VISUAL AIRCRAFT
RECOGNITION
In past conflicts the US and its allies retained air superiority over most battlefields and,
therefore, nearly all aircraft seen were of the friendly type. However, our enemies have
since reached at least a parity in aircraft quantity and quality and we can no longer
assume that we can control the airspace above all battlefields. There will be large
numbers of both threat and friendly aircraft occupying the airspace above any given
battlefield. This means that visual aircraft recognition is important for all members of the
