Baseline length is the straight-line distance between the two outermost DF
stations or sites. The depth at which a DF net can effectively locate enemy
transmitters is determined by the length of the baseline, as modified for
terrain and characteristics of the target emitter. Tactically, the deployment
and movement plans of the friendly unit in whose area of operations (AO) the DF
net is established will influence the deployment of the DF equipment.
The
target area to be covered will dictate the baseline configuration that is
employed in any given situation.
By the use of one ground DF site, as shown in Figure 1-1 below, a line of
bearing (LOB) can be obtained giving the general direction of an enemy
