INTRODUCTION
During World War I, chemical agents were introduced to the battlefield
with devastating effect. One reason for the enormous number of
casualties is that soldiers were unaccustomed to operating in a
chemical environment. Since the introduction of chemical agents,
improvements have been made in the protective equipment available to
protect personnel.
In 1945, nuclear weapons were first employed in war. The effects of
these weapons proved to be more destructive than any single weapon
used by man up to that point. Besides the destruction, these weapons
held a new feature that continued to cause casualties long after the
initial burst. Nuclear radiation can continue to cause casualties
through radiation sickness for long periods and many miles away from
the point of detonation.
Even as late as World War II, there were more American soldiers
removed from battle by sickness and disease than by combat wounds.
Imagine the impact had biological agents been intentionally employed
as a weapon.
Only through proper use of protective equipment and application of
prescribed NBC defensive measures can a unit operate within an NBC
environment.
