Using Homonyms and Word Pairs
One reason for misspelling is pronunciation. Some words have more than one
acceptable spelling. Some words sound just alike, but are spelled differently.
Homonyms are words that sound alike but have different meanings and are spelled
differently. To use homonyms correctly, you must consider the context of the
sentence and the meaning of the word require. Incorrect use of homonyms is an
error that spell-checking with your wd processing program will not correct
In addition to homonyms, many words are so nearly alike in spelling and sound that
they cause spelling problems too. The tables that follow show homonyms and other
word pairs that cause spelling problems.
