The AN/PVS-5 night vision goggles are a lightweight, battery-powered, passive night vision device worn on the
head. The goggles can be used with or without standard battle helmet and provide capabilities for reading,
performing manual tasks, patrolling, rendering medical aid, driving, walking, flying, and conducting surveillance.
This device has a 40-degree field of view. The system is normally operated in the passive mode. A built-in active
IR light source may be used to provide added illumination for close-up viewing. The range of the AN/PVS-5 is
150 meters (moonlight) and (starlight) man size target. It weighs 1.9 pounds (Figure 2-4).
The AN/PVS-5 is probably the most used night vision observation device in the MI battalion. The AN/PVS-5 is not
for aimed fire. It cannot be mounted on personal or crew-served weapons.
