Consider as another example, the odometer of a car:
As the automobile travels one tenth of one mile the tenth digit advances one tenth:
Two Tenths:
and so on up to nine tenths. Once the automobile has traveled one mile, the digit in the tenths (or 10-1)
position returns to zero and the digit in the ones (or 100) position becomes a one:
Thus the automobile has traveled one mile and the odometer has been incremented by a power of ten.
This process will continue as the automobile travels farther and farther. The 100 position would be
increased to nine and then zero and the tens (or 101) position would be increased to a one.
