The combined obstacles overlay should graphically reveal one or more MCs. Since
regiments normally advance along separate MCs, each division avenue of approach
should contain at least two regimental MCs.
A convenient technique for identifying avenues of approach is to place a doctrinal
template over a potential avenue of approach and visualize the enemy force moving
through (see Figure 2-18). Is there sufficient maneuver space?
Figure 2-18. Avenue of Approach for Tank Division.
Move the template along the avenues from the projected enemy assembly area to the
objective. It should provide relatively free movement. Obstacles should generally
parallel the direction of movement.
Select the most feasible avenue of approach. Let's take this procedure a step
further to identify MCs within the avenue of approach, using regiment and battalion
doctrinal templates.
Once the best avenue of approach has been selected, prepare an overlay depicting
the avenue and its MC as illustrated in Figure 2-19.
