The conduct of the AirLand Battle is based on offensive action.
In
execution, the AirLand Battle approach stresses maneuver, the human
dimension of warfare.
effort: all arms; all services; and all means of support.
To insure success, AirLand Battle doctrine concentrates on:
o
Indirect approaches.
o
Speed and violence.
o
o
Rapid decision making.
o
Clearly defined objectives and operational concepts.
o
A clearly designated main effort.
o
Deep attack.
AirLand Battle doctrine is a concept which seeks to lead technological and
organizational development. It is a forward-looking doctrinal concept. It
helps the Army seek the proper changes in technology needed for the evolving
nature of warfare.
Too often in the past technology has driven doctrinal
and subsequently tactical development. The AirLand Battle is an attempt to
reverse this historical trend.
AirLand Battle doctrine is an attempt to maximize the full potential of air
and ground systems. It is a recognition of the growing importance of the
vertical dimension of the contemporary battlefield. This is a facet that is
central to the success of AirLand Battle doctrine at the tactical level; and
even more so at the operational level.
Unified air and ground systems
provide a cooperative impact on the battlefield. Not since World War II has
there been an attempt to so closely coordinate the Air Force and Army. The
combined arms are in pursuit of a single objective - victory on the
battlefield.
emphasizes the employment of firepower and movement, primarily maneuver.
Maneuver has received increased focus on the AirLand Battlefield. This is a
result of the recognition that an outnumbered force cannot rely on firepower
dominance in an attrition exchange.
Maneuver is the dynamic element of combat power.
It allows for a
concentration of forces to gain surprise.
It also allows a commander to
gain a position of psychological or physical advantage over the enemy.
Firepower is used to shock and destroy enemy forces. Firepower is used to
reap the benefits gained by skillful movement. Movement and firepower are
inseparable and complimentary elements of maneuver combat. The elements of
combat power are:
o
Maneuver.
o
Firepower.
o
Protection.
o
Leadership.
These elements will be explained more fully in Learning Event 3.
