Rapidly enhance success in the offense or defense, to include the
effects of nuclear, chemical, and conventional fires, or
defending in place.

Conduct delaying actions against larger enemy heavy forces.

Conduct covering force operations for a corps or provide their
own covering force.

Provide
organic
air
defense
against
low-altitude
hostile
aircraft.
o
Conduct limited air mobile operations with subordinate elements
to quickly seize critical objectives.
o
Control up to 15 maneuver battalions through the command and
staff elements of division and brigade headquarters companies.
o
Conduct a battle in depth with organic and supporting systems
against enemy forces in friendly rear areas and by deep attack of
enemy follow-on echelons or reserves with massive use of air and
other supporting fires to seize the initiative.
The Limitations of the Division
Although the heavy division has many capabilities, it also has its
limitations.
Keep in mind the size of the armored and mechanized forces.
Some of the limitations of heavy division are:

Substantial
quantities
of
heavy
equipment
limit
strategic
mobility.
o
Primary dependence on radio communications.
o
Jungles, dense forests, steep and rugged terrain, built-up areas,
and water obstacles restrict mobility.
o
For long administrative ground moves, tracked vehicles require
heavy logistic support and often use railroad and highway
transport.
o
Substantial
transportation
support
requirements
involving
personnel and equipment during combat operations.
Now that the mission, capabilities, and limitations of the heavy division
have been reviewed, let us consider the organization of the heavy division
base under the new J-series TOE.
