MECHANIZED BATTALION
Obviously, there are tactical employment considerations that must be taken
into account before committing mechanized infantry.
Today's mechanized
infantry battalions are organized and equipped for mobile warfare with the
M2 infantry fighting vehicle.
Its operation in both the offense and the
defense is characterized by rapid changes in location.
It is also
characterized by rapidly changing from fighting mounted to fighting
dismounted.
The mechanized battalion requires more combat service support than other
infantry battalions.
It is also more sensitive to difficult terrain,
obstacles, and barriers than other infantry battalions.
The mechanized battalion is especially suited for use in the following
operations:
o
Defense.
o
Exploitation.
o
Pursuit.
o
Counterattack.
When dismounted, it is well suited for the following:
o
Operating in difficult terrain and adverse weather.
o
Moving by aircraft.
o
Breaching fixed defenses.
o
Closing with enemy forces in restrictive terrain.
The mechanized infantry battalion in the armored and mechanized
divisions is normally attached to a brigade. The brigade can employ
the battalion without attachments.
