PART C -M256A1 CHEMICAL AGENT DETECTOR KIT
Being alert for the symptoms and the method of attack are two ways of
protecting yourself and your unit against a chemical attack. There
are also additional sources of information for determining that an
attack is occurring or has occurred. These sources include alarm
systems, chemical agent detector kits, contamination markers, NBC
reports, occurrence of dead animals, and the appearance of oily
substances on foliages If your unit is in an area suspected of being
contaminated, the detector kit can be used to determine whether agents
are actually present in vapor or liquid form.

M256A1 Chemical Agent Detector Kit.
The M256A1 Chemical Agent Detector Kit (Figure 4-4) is issued at squad
level. This kit detects dangerous vapor or aerosol concentrations of
all known nerve, blister, and blood agents. It also detects residual
surface contamination. It is used when chemical agent use is
suspected or after a chemical attack.
a. Purpose.
The M256A1 Chemical Agent Detector Kit is used for monitoring and
reconnaissance of suspected contaminated areas. The purpose of the
M256A1 is to detect the presence of chemical agents in vapor and
liquid form. The M256A1 Chemical Agent Detector Kit is also used for
initiating unmasking procedures.
