Rule 3: Use Short Words
Use short, precise words to get your message across.
Introduction
Try to limit the use of long words to no more than 15 percent of the words you use.
Short words
Replace long words with shorter words with the same meaning.
Example:
LONG WORDS: The installation commanders promulgate directives
concerning when to initiate and terminate normal duty hours.
SHORT WORDS: Post commanders issue rules about the start and end of the
duty day.
Use clear, precise words. Avoid using vague or abstract wording.
Precise words
Example:
VAGUE WORDS: It is requested that the applicant place his or her signature in
the appropriate block on this form.
CLEAR WORDS: Please sign in Block 9.
