PART D - IDENTIFYING GAPS IN TERRAIN DATA
Terrain product requirements are compared with the terrain data base (developed in
function 4) to identify gaps. In addition to the maps covering the areas of
operations and interest, the following sources may prove helpful:
* Current
estimate
and
analysis
of
the
AO
from
higher
headquarters.
* Special terrain studies and products prepared by
US
and
host
country
agencies, special maps, charts, and geodetic surveys.
* Current photography.
The analysis of the battlefield area and the intelligence estimate are closely
related to many aspects of IPB. However, both contain elements not addressed in
the IPB products, such as information on people in the area, and are presented in
written format.
The terrain factor matrix provides a guide for terrain overlays needed to analyze
terrain. The matrix is developed through an analysis process that
