The Corps--What it does. The corps, because of its size and composition, is
required to anticipate the displacement and concentration of units. Because
of its size and composition, the corps has the capability to maneuver units
in a combination of directions.
It can also conduct a series of combat
actions leading to the defeat of an opposing force. Because of its size and
composition, the corps also has the capability to retain a high level of
freedom of action on the battlefield.
Note that the corps is the focal
point in coordinating the AirLand Battle and is the primary interface agency
between Air Force and Army elements.

In the US Army, we classify our corps as the
following:
o
Forward deployed corps.
An example would be the V and VII Corps
of Europe.
o
Contingency corps. An example would be one XVIII Airborne Corps
and the III Corps assigned to the continental US.
Corps can also be classified as heavy or light.
This depends on the
preponderance of mechanized or infantry combat units.
Forward Deployed Corps. As previously explained, the forward deployed corps
is one of the classifications of the corps.
Here, we will focus on its

established theater of operations. It is under US control or in a coalition
environment as part of a larger allied force.
