INTRODUCTION
In order for you to effectively conduct a marching band, you must be familiar with the formations and
alignment used by the band for drill and ceremony. You are also responsible for choosing the instrumental
placement which produces the best possible sound. Figure 2-1 shows the placement and spacing of the band
commander, the senior sergeant, the drum major, and bandmembers when the band is formed at normal
intervals. Figure 2-2 shows the placement and spacing of Army bands when the band is formed at close
intervals.

either suggested or authorized strength of Army bands.
