ABC: Term meaning American-born Chinese.
ALEUTS: Alaskan Indian natives of the Aleutian Islands.
ALIENS INELIGIBLE FOR CITIZENSHIP: Immigrants, many from Asia, who were ineligible for
naturalization and citizenship usually because of their race.
ALIEN LAND LAWS: Laws passed by several state legislatures, especially in the West, to prevent the
ownership of property by immigrants from Asia.
AMERICAN DREAM: A life blessed with consumer products, healthy children, respect from the
community, a good job, your own home and so on. In other words, Success in any endeavor can be
found in America.
AMERICAN INDIAN ALASKAN NATIVE: A person having origins in any of the original peoples of
North America and who maintains cultural identification through tribal affiliation or community

AMERICAN LOYALTY LEAGUE: A short-lived pioneer Japanese-American organization formed in
1918 to promote Integration and participation in American life.
ANDROGYNY: A blending of what is usually regarded as male or female characteristics, values, and
attitudes. It aims at integrating into one's personality the positive characteristics of the other sex as well
as one's own sex. (Campbell)
ANTI-SEMITISM: Hostility toward the Jews which is often expressed in the curtailment of their
religious, social, economic, or civil rights. (Handlin)
ASIAN EXCLUSION LAWS: A series of laws beginning with the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 and
culminating in the Exclusion Act of 1924 designed to limit or prevent immigration from Asia.
ASIAN OR PACIFIC ISLANDER: A person having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far
East, Southeast Asia, the Indian subcontinent, or the Pacific Islands. This area includes, for example,
China, India, Japan, Korea, the Philippine Islands and Samoa. (U.S. Dept of Commerce Directive No.
