A complete AN/PPS-15A(V) 1 radar set consists of 11 separate components and weights approximately 32
pounds. It is contained in a splashproof canvas case designed to be as comfortable as possible for the operator
who carries it. The case has wide straps, can be fastened to a pack frame, and has a low profile so it can be
carried through dense vegetation or jungle. The carrying case can also be packed in the transport case. The
transport case is used for storage or transport, and contains two additional components weighing approximately
70 pounds.
The AN/PPS-15A(V) 1 uses solid-state electronic components, is compact, and as a general rule, troubleshooting
and maintenance are minimal.
The AN/PPS-15A(V) 1 can be operated using an internal battery included in the carrying case. The radar can
also be operated using an external power source. A special cable is provided for that operation.
The AN/PPS-15A(V) 1 is employed three ways--
*
Terrestrial surveillance.
*
Target tracking.
*
Fixed point observation.
The AN/PPS-15A(V) 1 is a short-range radar with detection range of 50 to 3,000 meters.
The AN/PPS-15A(V) 1 identifies targets primarily through operator recognition of characteristic electrical headset
sounds. The radar can detect moving targets only. It is called a doppler radar because it uses that effect to
produce the characteristic signal heard by the operator. The doppler effect is the change in frequency of the
transmitted RF energy when it is reflected off a moving target. The target signature has a lower pitch as the
target goes farther away, and higher as the target comes closer. The frequency does not change unless the
target is in motion. For this reason, the AN/PPS-15A(V) 1 cannot detect stationary targets.
The AN/PPS-15A(V) 1 can detect walking or running personnel at 50 to 1,500 meters, crawling personnel at 50 to
500 meters, and a moving vehicle at 50 to 3,000 meters.
