allocate enabling resources. Like the AO, the AI uses planning consideration times
to provide a basic set of guidelines for determining its limits. Figure 2-4 shows
the planning consideration times used in determining the AI for the echelons of
battalion through EAC.

Areas of Operations and Interest Evaluation
Function 1 of IPB is Battlefield Area Evaluation. During this step, the scope of
IPB is narrowed to a specific area of the battlefield. The evaluation considers
all OB elements applicable to this specific area.
After the specific areas have been evaluated, the information and materials
required to continue the IPB process are assembled.
The area of operations is determined by the commander based upon available systems
under his command and control. The size of the area fluctuates with the specific
effect desired on the enemy, the assets available, and the effects of weather,
terrain, and time on those assets. It is within this area that the commander is
directly capable of influencing operations by maneuver and/or fire support systems.
The capability to influence the enemy is one of the factors considered when
assigning an AO. The area of interest will vary in size and shape from operation
to operation (Figure 2-3).
