INTRODUCTION
The outcome of battle is decided by the application of combat power at decisive
times and places on the battlefield. IPB products provide a guide to the commander
and his staff In determining where and when to use limited resources to achieve
decisive results. They are excellent tools for planning and fighting the close and
interdiction phases of the operation.
PART A - SITUATION TEMPLATE
Through the use of IPB products and methodologies, the commander is kept informed
of the current and projected situation in a timely and continuous manner.
Doctrinal and situation templates provide the basis for comparing collected
information, such as electromagnetic signatures, equipment ratios, radar
exploitation report (RADAREXREP), and to determine size, composition, and
capabilities of located units. They also assist in determining what we don't know
about the enemy.
Rarely does a single location or point in time satisfy the requirements for
developing IPB products. As forces move along an avenue of approach or MC,
adjustments to dispositions and frontages are continuous. Situation templates form
a series of "snapshots" that represent the adjustments that could be made for that
MC. Figure 6-1 is a situation template depicting a motorized rifle regiment (MRR)
superimposed on an MC without regard to terrain.
