Airborne Division Tactical Employment Considerations.
In meeting its
mission, there are a number of considerations to take into account when
employing an airborne division. While we cannot possibly cover all of the
considerations, there are three points that require discussion. These three
points are as follows:
1.
The airborne division participates in joint operations more often
than any other type force in the Army of Excellence.
2.
Normally, nine infantry battalions are assigned to an airborne
division. Three or five battalions may be assigned to a separate
airborne brigade.
Once inserted, air dropped or airlanded,
They are similar because they are then footmobile.
3.
Airborne infantry can conduct a show of force or act as a
strategic reserve.
The airborne division can move great
distances quickly to seize key terrain deep in the enemy's rear.
A prerequisite for a successful airborne operation is the ability
to reinforce and resupply the unit either by air or by rapid
ground advance to effect linkup.
Note that the airborne division, in terms of its mission and employment, is
a rapidly deployable force of the Army of Excellence.
It enhances our
capacity as a fighting force to impact on geo-strategic events as they
arise. Next, we will consider the capabilities of the airborne division.
