They normally accompany the infantry brigades when employed
during combat operations.
Airborne Division Artillery (DIVARTY)
Unlike the heavy division, the airborne division is organized around towed
artillery pieces. As you recall, the heavy division employed self-propelled
artillery pieces.
Deployability dictates the need for a lightweight
artillery, thus the obvious reason for organization around towed artillery
pieces.
Figure 13 depicts the airborne division artillery. Its elements include a
headquarters and headquarters battery, and field artillery.
The towed
105-mm howitzer is included under field artillery.
The towed 105-mm
howitzer has a range of 11,500 meters. This is some 12,500 meters less than
the self-propelled 155-mm of the heavy division.
The 105-mm howitzer
provides direct support to the airborne division and the brigades of the
division.
