Summary
In this learning event, we have covered each division within the US Army of
Excellence structure.
The divisions are the heavy division, airborne
division, air assault division, infantry division, and light infantry
division. The mission of the divisions is to destroy enemy military forces
and to secure or dominate critical land areas, their populations, and
resources.
The heavy division is classified as armored or mechanized.
The type of
division depends on the number and type of maneuver battalions assigned.
The armored division is assigned four mechanized and six tank battalions.
The mechanized division is assigned five mechanized and five tank
battalions.
Battalions destroy or disrupt the enemy and seize and hold
terrain.
The US Army heavy division provides us with a mobile, armor-
Because of their mobility and
survivability, the heavy divisions are used when battles are fought over
wide areas.
During offensive operations they rapidly concentrate combat
power to break through enemy defenses and strike deep. This is an important
the heavy division as part of the US Army structure. The heavy division is
not suited for employment in restrictive terrain (such as jungles,
mountains, or swamps). Urbanized terrain also impedes maneuver. The heavy
division base consists of command and control headquarters, combat, combat
support, and combat service support units.
The mission of the airborne division is oriented toward rapidly
deploying anywhere in the world on short notice to secure critical
facilities, reinforce US and Allied forces, and to conduct a show of
force.
The airborne division is unique to the Army of Excellence
because it is the only one of its kind and because it can be rapidly
deployed.
The airborne division can be employed to "air drop" by
parachute into the enemy's rear battle area. These factors add an extra
dimension to the AirLand Battle doctrine.
The airborne division
participates in joint operations more often than any other type force in
