These methods are:
Visual observation
Chemical detection and identification devices
NBC warning and reporting system
a. Visual Observation.
The process of observing visual indicators is perhaps the simplest
method of gaining NBC information. Three examples follow.
Example 1
You observe a blinding flash of light some distance to the west. You
take immediate protective actions. After the blast wave has passed,
the following information becomes of command interest:
Date and time of blast
Your location and the location of the blast
Direction of blast from grid north (in mils or degrees) (state
which)
Flash-to-bang time (in seconds)
Air or surface burst
Cloud width and cloud top or bottom (in mils or degrees, state
which)
Example 2
You observe an incoming artillery shell detonate with little or no
explosion. You further observe that the shell has scattered an
putting on your protective mask and sounding the alarm, "Gas." The
following information becomes of command interest:
Date and time
Your location and the location where the shell impacted
Means of delivery
Example 3
Upon entering an area you observe an aircraft delivering a spray
which, by observation, you assume is a biological agent. Take
and getting into MOPP 4. The following information then becomes of
command interest:
IS0345
